Rediscovering Obscure Music for Violin
There is a great deal of music waiting to be rediscovered, written by composers who were perhaps once famous but are now neglected or marginalized. Much of this music is of high quality and unjustly forgotten. Composers like Charles Auguste de Bériot (the great nineteenth-century Belgian violinist, composer, and founder of the Franco-Belgian school of violin playing), who is only remembered today for a few concertos and showpieces, wrote a great deal of other pedagogically invaluable works for violin. Volume one of my recording project is focused on opera transcriptions by Bériot. Several pieces on this album are collaborative compositions, with contemporary pianists of Bériot (including George Alexander Osborne, Benoit Constant Fauconier, and Georges Mathias) providing the virtuoso piano scores.
